Damian is the male rival character in Pokémon Insurgence.
In the game
Damian is introduced to the player as soon as they walk into Telnor Town, where he excitedly confronts the player about having seen Mew moments before. He explains that the town is expecting the Second Augur, Jaern to pay them a visit before hurrying off to the Town Hall to give them a hand. When the player joins Damian inside the Town Hall, they observe a conversation between his stepmother and father where his father insists that he get a Rare Stone from inside Telnor Cave to present to Jaern and his stepmother vehemently objects to the idea, insisting that Damian is too immature and is incapable of taking care of a plant, much less a Pokémon. An argument ensues which ultimately results in the player assisting Damian with fetching Jaern's present but not before getting a starter Pokémon from Professor Sylvan's lab.
Once inside the lab, Damian and the player overhear an intense conversation between Reukra and Professor Sylvan concerning the fate of three Delta Pokémon that Reukra has inside of his briefcase. When Professor Sylvan proposes the idea of taking care of one of these Pokémon, Damian feels unsure about looking after something so unnatural, but ultimately decides to follow the protagonist's lead. As would be expected of a rival, he challenges the player to a battle after both characters have obtained their starters. When the battle is over Damian then heads off towards Telnor Cave.
At the very end of Telnor Cave, Damian manages to identify the Rare Stone but ignores it soon after as he joins the player in eavesdropping on a conversation between an Abyssal Cultist and an Infernal Cultist. From this conversation the pair is able to learn that two cultists are going to conduct an assassination attempt. Rushing back to Telnor Town immediately, Damian and the player burst into the Town Hall as Damian exclaims that two people in the room are about to kill the Second Augur. As his father begins to scold Damian, the two cultists reveal themselves, but are stopped from carrying out their mission by Damian and the player. After both cultists are defeated, Jaern makes them disappear using an incantation and then praises both Damian and the player for their skill and bravery before inviting them to seek him out in Helios City. With the Augur's words of approval, Damian's parents have no choice but to allow Damian to leave and embark on his journey.
The next time that the player encounters Damian is in the Trainer School in Midna Town, where Damian appears to be preparing for an upcoming tournament. After the player locates Nora, which allows the tournament to begin, Damian faces the protagonist in the tournament's second round. Despite his insistence that his battling skills were above average to the teacher after the end of the tournament, she refuses to acknowledge his skills and also does not give him the prize that Nora and the player receive.
Damian and the player meet yet again in Vipik City, where Damian tactlessly begins to talk about both Nora and the protagonist being potential prophecy candidates, as Nora had predicted might happen. An Abyssal Cultist overhears this bit of information before wandering off after Damian denies having said anything having to do with Mew out loud. However, Damian's obvious lie fails to do him any good as the Abyssal Cult kidnaps him while the player battles Xavier in the Vipik Gym, warning the player that he or she had better bring Mew to the Vipik Dump in order to save Damian.
Once the player reaches the part of the dump where Damian is being held, the cultists attack. The player's victory over them is in vain, however, as the cultist leading the kidnapping simply threatens to kill Damian right then and there unless Mew shows itself. Mew reveals itself only to have Shaymin fly in and remove the toxic pool surrounding Damian, effectively rendering the Abyssal Cult's threats useless. After the Abyssal Cult flees, Damian concludes that Shaymin joining him means that he could be the person that the prophecy refers to instead.
The protagonist and Damian reunite once again in the Rezzai Cavern after the player witnesses the Sky Cult attempt to kill off a man and his family moments beforehand. Once Damian has satisfied his need to battle the player yet again, he listens to what the player just observed and worriedly talks about the fact that the Augur is in grave danger if the Sky Cult is planning to do something with him. He rushes off towards Helios City, leaving the player to follow him.
In Helios City, Damian informs the player that they'll need to find another way into the Jade Tower since it's currently overrun with Sky Cultists. The pair separate only to reunite shortly after inside of the Black Market and then again inside of the Perfection Base. Damian asks for Reukra's assistance only to be met with a complete lack of sympathy for what happens to the Augur. However, Reukra decides that he may have some use for Damian and the protagonist and permits the two of them to use the Mega Ring that he provides in order to gather data concerning Mega Evolution. He also grants the duo free passage in and out of the Jade Tower from the base itself.
When Damian and the player manage to reach the Augur at the top of the tower, Damian once again reaches out to him and warns him that cultists are after him. Jaern appears to be troubled by this situation, but this is shortly revealed to be because Jaern has been the leader of the Sky Cult this entire time. Therefore, Jaern discusses his desire to have the player and Damian thrown in the Helios City jail for discovering his secret, despite feeling somewhat sorry for having to do this to Damian due to his pure and friendly personality. When Jaern states that he feels no remorse for leaving the protagonist to rot, Damian manages to appeal to the perverse sense of justice lingering inside of the Augur by having Jaern agree to spare their lives if the player manages to defeat East in a battle. After East is defeated, Damian is forced to watch as his former idol heads further up the tower to summon Rayquaza.
After the player manages to defeat Jaern and his Rayquaza, Damian arrives not a second too late to shatter the Augur's crystal with Shaymin's Seed Flare, ultimately saving them both from Jaern and Rayquaza's wrath. As Jaern leaves, the two heroes are left to ponder what they'll do next since the Second Augur has practically brainwashed the entire Torren Region to the point that no one will believe their story.
This marks the end of Damian's role in the story at this point in the game's development
