East was the Gym Leader of Helios City's Gym, known officially as the Helios Gym. He specialized in mostly Dragon and Flying-type Pokémon. He would give the Summit Badge to Trainers who defeated him.
In the game
East appears in Pokémon Insurgence as the Gym Leader of Helios City's Gym. This Gym is the third to be challenged by the player. Trainers who defeat him will be given the Summit Badge, along with TM40 (Aerial Ace). In the player's case, they are required to go through a few more events before obtaining these rewards.
The player's first encounter with East is in the Jade Tower where they can see him acting as Jaern's subordinate. When the Second Augur decides to have East battle the player in order to decide which trainer will be sacrificed to summon Rayquaza, East appears startled by the idea that Jaern would sacrifice his most loyal subordinate so easily but reluctantly obeys.
After East is defeated, Jaern remains true to his word by ending East's life in order to continue with his goal. The rewards that he would normally give to trainers after being defeated are therefore only received by the player after putting a stop to Jaern's plans.
East's last words can be found in East's Will, which is given to the player along with the Summit Badge and TM40 (Aerial Ace).
In Nasca Town it is revealed that there is a possibility that East survived due to Rayquaza's wishes.

Trivia
- The item East uses to Mega Evolve his Altaria is the "Mega Cane".
- One of the Sky Cultists states that East was the strongest Gym Leader in the region. This may be interpreted as an overstated opinion.
- However, the truth of this statement is somewhat reinforced by Jaern's confidence that East would not lose to the player in battle.
