A Mega Stone is a type of held item that allows Pokémon to Mega Evolve.

Mechanics

During battle, the player can use their Key Stone-activating item, the Mega Ring to Mega Evolve a Pokémon before it attacks if it is holding the correct Mega Stone. Mega Stones only affect Pokémon during battles, and Pokémon will revert back to their basic form once the battle has ended or upon fainting. All Pokémon that can undergo Mega Evolution have an equivalent Mega Stone that is named after them, except for Rayquaza, which instead needs to know the move Dragon Ascent to Mega Evolve.

Mega Stones cannot be transferred to or from the correct holder during battle: Thief and Covet do not take the Mega Stone, Knock Off does not remove the Mega Stone, Trick and Switcheroo fail, Fling and Bestow fail, and Symbiosis does not activate. Embargo and Magic Room also cannot prevent the use of Mega Stones to Mega Evolve Pokémon. Mega Stones are not consumed upon use, but only one Pokémon can Mega Evolve per battle.

Availability

Mega Stones can be found numerous ways throughout the player's journey. Mega Stones are also sometimes found on the ground as a hidden item. Unlike the official games, they do not sparkle. Some can only being obtained through certain requirements like defeating a Gym Leader or collecting certain amounts of Flags from Friend Safaris.

Certain Mega Stones available during Mystery Gifts are removed as new Mystery Gifts are made available. These Mega Stones will become available to all players in-game during future updates. Additionally, the starter Mega Stones found inside of the Perfection Base change depending on whether or not the player is playing the game on Purity Mode. Those that are not playing on Purity Mode will be unable to acquire Blastoisinite, Charizardite Y, and Venusaurite without trading with another player.

Trivia

  • The design of the Mega Stones appear to be based on a common pattern found in the glass marble called a toothpaste marble.
